The Bits to Energy Lab is dedicated to research on Information Systems that support the transition to a sustainable energy supply and use. It focuses on consumer behaviour concerning both, everyday behaviour and investment decisions, and pays special attention to capturing and using consumption data to promote behaviour change. Information Systems in this context are both, a tool to observe the behaviour of individuals in natural settings and over long timespans, thus providing insights into activities that are difficult to study in lab settings, and an entity that is to be designed to successfully introduce related products and services. The lab’s research results have been published in leading scientific journals of the information systems community (e.g., Management Science, Management Information Systems Quarterly, and Information Systems Research) and in the energy domain (Nature Energy, Applied Energy, Energy) and have been named Research Highlight by Nature.

The Bits to Energy Lab is organized as a joint initiative of ETH Zurich (Professorship of Information Management, DMTEC), the University of St. Gallen (Institute of Technology Management), Bamberg University (Chair of Information Systems and Energy Efficient Systems), and Friedrich-Alexander University (Professorship for Digital Transformation). It was founded in 2009 and has since given rise to three successful ETH spinoff companies. The team has already carried out numerous high-impact projects (e.g., the lighthouse project Quartierstrom on local energy markets and the smart meter impact assessment for Switzerland on behalf of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy), and several doctoral students have been granted the ETH Medal and other research awards.

**Project background**

The energy industry is undergoing a comprehensive transformation. Electricity suppliers in particular are under significant pressure due to advancing technology that affects both, their traditional fields of value creation (with the growing importance of decentralized generation and “intelligent” distribution networks) and the way of running the business and interacting with their customers (with digitalization and the need for increased agility). This development is accompanied by changes in the regulatory frameworks (first and foremost the ongoing liberalization of the market), rising expectations regarding the contribution of electricity suppliers to climate protection, and an inevitable transformation from a monopolistic utility to a customer-oriented service provider. The associated pressure for change is offset by major opportunities arising from the growing importance of electricity, e.g., for mobility and building heating, and the numerous services that can result from improved data availability and closer interaction with consumers.

In this environment, numerous new business models and service offerings are emerging, and the roles of the players are sometimes being redistributed. So far, there has been no detailed examination of the associated (business model) innovation and no scientifically based systematization of the actors' approaches, or the mechanisms touched by the innovators. An examination of the topic would be both relevant for corporate practice and of interest for research since changes of the expected magnitude across entire industries can rarely be observed on this scale.

**Job description**

The 3- to 4-year PhD position is based in the Professorship of Information Management at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. There will be a requirement to take courses at

**ETH Zurich as part of the PhD training program.**

**Your profile**

The following attributes, qualifications, and experience would be highly advantageous:

- MSc degree in information systems, computer science, electrical engineering, or industrial engineering, or psychology, economics, or statistics, ideally in combination with the business administration
- Experience with or strong interest in empirical analysis, power grids, surveys, and consumer and organizational behaviour.
- Ability to work in a team and good communication skills
- Ability to structure your work and interest in collaborating with industry partners
- Excellent knowledge of the German language, both written and spoken, is an absolute requirement
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
