Head of Middle Office

**Purpose of the job**:
- Responsible for supporting banking activities with high-quality middle office services.
- Directs and supervises the activities of staff members in the middle office in the areas of performance and risk measurement, reporting, control, analysis, business development, middle office operations, as well as support of internal and external clients.

**Principal accountabilities**:
1. **Performance and risk measurement and reporting**
- Development, implementation and operation of systems, processes and procedures for the measurement of profit and loss, performance and risk for the BIS borrowed funds, BIS own funds, BIS pension fund and third-party asset management products.
- Development and production of regular and ad-hoc reports for internal and external clients.
2. **Control and support of compliance monitoring activities**
- Implementation of the Bank’s three-lines of defence model with regards to middle office activities and support of front-office functions in the performance of their control activities.
- Development, implementation and operation of systems, processes and procedures for control of the valuation of collateral instruments.
3. **Analysis**
- Support of front-office functions in the daily profit and loss analysis process.
- Support of Banking management, front office functions and committees in their investment decision making by performing risk return studies on investment portfolios as well as asset and liability studies.
- Ad-hoc quantitative research to support Banking management, front-office functions and external clients.
4. **Operations**
- Coordination, performance and assistance in various operations including the daily amendment process, profit transfers, share subscriptions and dividend payments to BIS shareholders.
- Performance of fund administration function for third party asset management including injections and withdrawals, reconciliations and fee invoicing.
5. **Support of business development activities**
- Coordination of and contributions to the development of new banking products and services. Provides secretariat function to the New Banking Activity Committee (NBAC) as well as. support to external clients on quantitative questions.
- Contributions to knowledge sharing events organised by the Banking Department.
6. **Committee participation and business relationships**
- Participation in a number of Committees including New Banking Activity Committee, Third-party Asset Management Committee, and Management Accounting Coordinating Function. Observer in the Pension Fund Portfolio Committee and the Pension Fund Committee.
- Management of relationships with external service providers in the context of outsourced asset management mandates for the own funds and third-party asset management products.
- Acts as the principal operational point of contact between the Banking Department and Risk Management and Finance on different topics.
7. **Staff responsibilities**
- Leads, motivates, and develops staff. Takes accountability for all HR matters in the team including recruitment, transfers and promotions. Carries out performance review discussions with staff. Ensures an efficient flow of work in the area of responsibility.
**Qualifications, skills and experience**:
- Demonstrable experience in the field of financial markets and/or risk management.
- Detailed knowledge of financial instruments and markets as well as quantitative analytics.
- Excellent management, organisational and administration skills.
- Very good written and oral communication skills in English.
