**_ Context:_**

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Director, Office of Partnerships, Advocacy and
Communications (OPAC), and in coordination with Senior Management and IOM Regional and
Country Offices worldwide, the Spokesperson and Director, Department of Media and
Communications is accountable and responsible for the overall formulation and implementation
of the Organization's internal and external communications.

**_ Core Functions / Responsibilities:_**

1. Serve as a global spokesperson, making official statements on behalf of the organization in
press conferences, media interviews, United Nations fora, and elsewhere as required.

2. Provide strategic, timely and accurate advice to the Director General and senior leadership
team on relevant Public Relations (PR) and media related priorities.

3. Communicate IOM’s mission, strategic objectives and values on complex issues in a
balanced and consistent manner, ensuring a robust and shared corporate identity that is broadly
understood by external partners and through a variety of media.

4. Provide clear, timely, and accurate information, data, and analysis to the media and external
stakeholders.

5. Respond promptly, in coordination with the leadership team, to relevant emergencies in a
highly visible way.

6. Increase IOM’s visibility on development throughout the year in close coordination with the
Divisions of Private Sector Partnerships and Resource Mobilization.

7. Work closely with department and division heads to highlight key topics such as migration
and climate change, migration as a catalyst for development, the importance of migration
pathways, and IOM’s humanitarian work.

8. Develop and implement strategic media, communications, and public relations activities,
including risk and reputation management in all forms of media and communications.

9. Supervise the Department of Media and Communications in Headquarters and relevant
Regional and Country Office teams for the implementation of key advocacy, communications,
and public relations priorities in line with IOM’s overall strategic framework.

10. Establish, maintain, and update timeline of upcoming international high-level events and
activities with relevance for media and communications, both inside and outside of the
organization.

11. Oversee the social media accounts of the Director General, the leadership team, and the
organization and ensure accurate, timely, and consistent communications across online media
platforms and institutional websites.

12. Ensure timely and accurate internal communications within the organization on behalf of the
senior leadership team on matters of key strategic and organizational priorities.

13. Perform other media and communications-related tasks, as directed by the Director General
and Senior Director of OPAC.

**_ Required Qualifications and Experience:_**

**Education**
- Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism or a related field from an accredited academic

institution with fifteen years of relevant experience.
** Experience**
- Minimum ten years’ experience working in the field of newspaper, television, broadcast

journalism or related field;
- Proven experience in media and communications in the context of global affairs, international

relations or related area in an international context;
- Experience in dealing with politically sensitive issues and proven record in answering press

interviews; and,
- Experience with media relations and crisis communications in international and emergency

contexts.
