As a Laboratory Technician in Ruminal Microbiology, you will help with the preparation, collection, processing and analysis of animal samples, mainly for microbiological purposes. You will perform the routinary growth and maintenance of microbial strains under strict anaerobic conditions. In addition, you will support the scientists and the laboratory manager during the conduction of in vitro and ex vivo assays at the NIAS Animal Nutrition labs.

**A Day in the Life of a Laboratory Technician in Ruminal Microbiology
- Prepare media and conditions for the in vitro growth of different types of microorganisms under anaerobic (anoxic and highly reduced) conditions (both in liquid and solid media)
- Prepare microbial cultures for inoculation into different types of in vitro systems containing animal samples as well as for in vivo trials, and further collect, process and analyze the samples following standard operation procedures (in strict anaerobic conditions)
- Collect ruminal fluid from abattoir, as well as cattle manure from farms, to be used as inoculum for in vitro and in vivo assays
- Conduct routinary equipment maintenance, calibrations and quality checks
- Help to test data, verify results and prepare reports
- Keep adequate digital records of project codes, sample numbers, treatments applied and associated raw data from the different experiments conducted in the NIAS
- Animal Nutrition laboratory
- Material purchasing, parcel packing, delivery, and reception of samples
- Monitor laboratory hygiene conditions
- Work collaboratively with other members of the NIAS Animal Nutrition laboratory (Lab manager and technicians) as well as with scientists and other related colleagues

**What will make you successful
- Higher Diploma or above in Microbiology, Biology or Biochemistry
- Experience in laboratory work with microbiology (previous experience working in the field of animal sciences is a plus)
- Experience in working with anaerobic systems
- Good analytical and organizational skills
- Good knowledge of basic computer skills
- Good communication skills in English (written and oral) and French (at least oral)
- Driver’s license
