Upbound is the company behind Crossplane, the open source project which started the control plane revolution in the cloud native community. Upbound helps companies rise above the clouds with our Crossplane powered Universal Cloud Platform. With Upbound you get universal real-time visibility into all of your infrastructure environments, the same API centric approach Kubernetes pioneered for managing infrastructure and policies, and self service infrastructure capabilities.

We are growing our Engineering team to help scale and secure our new global product offerings. We are looking for an Engineering Manager to help lead, design, coach, and build an efficient, productive, and fun team. We want someone who's excited to jump in and find solutions to organizational impediments, create and own processes that enhance team health and streamline hiring processes. Someone who understands the technical challenges that the team is facing and helps drive improvements.

**In this role, you will...**
- Foster growth. You will (virtually) meet with team members on a regular basis, help plan and support career development, and recruit top-tier engineers.
- Exhibit Passion. Our customers are passionate about Upbound, and we want the same from our leaders. As a manager, you should be motivating your team, fostering collaboration, and embodying excitement about the projects.
- Identify and remove impediments. You will diagnose and resolve systemic obstacles that prevent your teams from delivering high-quality software, nurturing an atmosphere of continuous improvement by serving as a coach, mentor, and technical advisor.
- Drive for Automation. You constantly consider, "How can I automate this manual process?" and inspire teams to embrace this philosophy.
- Strive for collecting robust metrics, data, and monitoring information from our services, ensuring that if an issue arises, the team is alerted before our customers notice.
- Keep calm and carry on. You coach teams on appropriately handling a product outage, identifying performance bottlenecks, spotting anomalous system behavior, and determining the root cause of incidents.
- Deliver software and infrastructure that will help drive improvements towards the availability, performance, efficiency, scalability and security of Upbound's services. Technologies include Kubernetes, Go, GCP, ArgoCD, MySQL, GraphQL, Typescript, React, and more...
- Operationalize the Engineering team to ensure they are properly resourced, utilized (capacity planning), and functioning at maximum efficiency.

**You are a good fit if you have...**
- 5+ years of technical contributor and leadership experience, demonstrated ability in managing technical personnel, and experience in working within SaaS environments.
- Managed a globally distributed team in a fast scaling startup environment.
- Worked closely with product management to help prioritize and execute a deep product roadmap
- Hands on experience with cloud, containers, distributed systems, and the cloud native ecosystem in general
- Lead teams to design, build, and scale highly available and secure services on Kubernetes and multiple cloud providers
- A strong belief in providing useful abstractions, clear customer SLOs, and meaningful KPIs, all while avoiding accidental complexity.
- Confidence in asking difficult questions by challenging your team and dependencies while being highly collaborative and open to input.
- Demonstrated history of mentoring and growing engineers with varying levels of experience and skills in a globally distributed environment.
- Passion about open source and connecting with the community.

**It's a plus if**
- You have worked in multiple remote/distributed startups before and can bring that experience to bear at Upbound.
- Have a solid understanding of the open source software business, communities, and landscape.
