The Institute of Primary Health Care of the University of Bern (BIHAM) is dedicated to train and foster the next generation of primary care physicians and pharmacists and to carry out research in primary health care, epidemiology, and public health. The BIHAM offers a lively, interdisciplinary environment with excellent methodological support and access to a large network of practicing primary care physicians.

The BIHAM Pharmacy team is looking for a highly motivated PhD student in medication in pregnancy. Safety and effectiveness of medication during pregnancy is assessed mostly using observational approaches once the product is on the market, as usually pregnant women are excluded from randomized clinical trials. Health care databases have been increasingly used in the past decade in the US or the North of Europe as information source to conduct large post marketing observational studies in pregnancy as they often offer an effective solution with respect to costs, numbers of pregnancies included, validity and generalizability. What about the use of health care databases in Switzerland?

Duties and responsibilities
- In your PhD, you will help to harness and create a cohort from anonymous claims data stemming from a large Swiss health insurance.
- You will use this unique cohort to answer relevant research questions on medication use in pregnancy.
- In a team of epidemiologists, clinicians, statisticians and PhD students, you will learn different statistical approaches to extract relevant information and mitigate biases in these data not collected for research purposes.
- You will present your results at international meetings and publish them in peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications and skills
- Applicants should have a university degree (MD, MSc or equivalent) in pharmacy, medicine or a related field (biology, biostatistics, public health, psychology etc.) and a strong interest in pharmacoepidemiology.
- Having already experience in statistical methods and programming would be a great asset.
- The position requires fluency in English, knowledge of French or German would be an asset.
