Phd Position in Scandinavian Studies

As of **1 December 2023**, or by agreement, a **PhD position (100%)** is to be filled at the seminar of Scandinavian Studies at the University of Basel for a period of three years.
The position is part of the research project "**Resonating networks. Discursive, spatial and personal hubs of research paradigms in Old Norse studies (1650-1950)**" (Prof. Dr. Lena Rohrbach, University of Basel; Prof. Dr. Lukas Rösli, HU Berlin), funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the German Research Foundation (DFG). A total of seven part projects will investigate the origins of central terminologies and concepts in international research on the Scandinavian Middle Ages from the 17th to the 20th century and their continuing impact in complex networks of researchers, research institutions and texts. The project will begin its work on 1 December.
**Your position**
As part of the binational research project, you will work on a part project on the development of terms and concepts of textual criticism avant la lettre in the works of Dano-Icelandic manuscript collectors and proto-philologists at the beginning of the history of Old Norse studies in the 17th and 18th centuries. This project will focus on the manuscript tradition and printed texts in the circles of Árni Magnússon and Thormod Torfæus. The concrete scope of the part project will be developed conjointly. The dissertation can be written in German or English.
As part of the project work, you will also participate in joint events in close cooperation with the other project members and take part in the regular project meetings.
**Your profile**
- research interests: Old Norse literary history, Scandinavian early modern period, Scandinavian manuscript culture, (history of) textual criticism
- good passive language skills of Old Norse/Icelandic and a modern Scandinavian language. Knowledge of Latin is an advantage.
- interest in dealing with theoretical approaches and historical issues
- quick comprehension, ability to work in a team, organizational skills, independence, flexibility, creativity
