Group AlpWISE from the Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics of the University of Lausanne seeks to fill a **graduate assistant position in the field of mountain stream ecology.**

Up to 50% of the position will be to provide teaching assistance in relation to undergraduate and Masters courses in the fields of fluvial processes and sediment transport (Bachelors, French), aquatic ecosystems (Masters, English) and other classes in related fields mainly in the Environmental Science programmes of the Faculty of Geosciences and Environment, University of Lausanne.

At least 50% of the position will be related to completion of a PhD thesis in the field of monitoring instream glacial ecosystems using environmental DNA. This thesis is likely to have a focus upon the relationships between glacier recession and the development of embryonic ecosystems, particularly in relation to macrozoobenthos, and including new ways of looking at functional connectivity in such environments and innovative new methods for data collection and analysis. This will involve research using environmental DNA and collaboration with the Department of Ecology and Evolution in the Faculty of Biology and Medicine at the University of Lausanne

**Your responsibilities**:

- Provide assistantship to practical and field classes concerned with mountain streams and other related topics.
- Provide technical and field support to students undertaking Masters and Bachelors projects in the field of mountain stream ecology and other related topics.
- Provide support to the AlpWISE group (e.g. organisation of meetings, social media)
- Undertake research in the field of mountain stream ecosystems with joint supervision by Stuart Lane (IDYST-Alpwise) and Luca Fumagalli (DEE) that leads to a PhD

**Your qualifications**:

- Master’s degree in environmental sciences, ecology, physical geography or a specialist field such as geochemistry, river and catchment management, Alpine/Polar environments, glacial environments or biodiversity and conservation
- A completed Masters research thesis based on ecological sampling of mountain stream ecosystems with a particular focus on macrozoobenthos
- Excellent data analysis and quantitative skills including programming using languages such as Matlab, R or Python and GIS
- Experience of data collection in remote field environments, ideally in isolated/mountainous settings.
- An interest and willingness to teach
- An excellent command of written and spoken English and French
- A driving license (or willingness to obtain one)
