- Deliverables and support provided by the consultant will help UNEP achieve its commitments under the UNEP project “Addressing Lead and Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs), as part of the UNEP project “Chemicals, Environment, and Health: Accelerating transition towards toxic free planet” (Project ID: 194919), as well as agreed workplans with the Ministry of Environment of Japan and the United States Environment Protection Agency in addressing lead pollution in Africa and Asia-Pacific regions through pilot activities.

- 12 months (part time 80 %)**Responsibilities**:

- The consultant will support as per the timeline indicated above, including the following tasks: UNEP project “Addressing Lead and Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs), as part of the UNEP project “Chemicals, Environment, and Health: Accelerating transition towards toxic free planet” (Project ID: 194919) - Convene stakeholder consultations to review options and opportunities to address lead (Pb) from the most significant sources globally. - Develop a set of policy options to address main lead sources across the various economic sectors globally, as elements of broad lead contamination reduction strategies. - Providing technical support in demonstrating the implementation of identified strategies and measures in selected ECOWAS countries with a focus on lead management related priorities identified by the countries, including lead-acid batteries. Addressing lead pollution in Asia-Pacific region - Providing technical support in developing/selecting of a strategy/set of measures for one of priority lead sources identified by the pilot countries in Asia-Pacific and for development of a roadmap for its implementation. - Organizing an online meeting for exploring the feasibility of transitioning towards a holistic, sectoral approach to address lead pollution in Asia-Pacific region and sharing the experiences and lessons learned from the pilot projects at regional level. - Preparing a brief report on the outcomes of the consultation conducted in Asia-Pacific region on the feasibility of transitioning towards a holistic, sectoral approach to address lead pollution. Addressing lead pollution in Africa region - Providing technical support in developing/selecting of a strategy/set of measures with a focus on lead paint, lead-acid batteries and other priorities identified by the selected country in Africa and one roadmap for its implementation. - Organizing one online meeting for sharing the experiences and lessons learned from the pilot project in selected country in Africa region at regional and global level.
- Qualifications/special skills
- Master’s degree or equivalent in a field related to environment/health/natural sciences. Two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the university degree. - At least five years of relevant experience, in a field related to international chemicals and waste management, including lead management - A comprehensive understanding of international and regional regulations related to hazardous substances and lead pollution, including familiarity with UNEP guidelines and tools, is required. - Proficiency in utilizing advanced analytical tools and data interpretation relevant to lead pollution is required for conducting accurate assessments and providing informed recommendations. - Strong communication skills are required for preparing comprehensive reports and documentation, including clear and concise presentations of findings, recommendations, and progress reports. - Capacity to employ a multidisciplinary approach, integrating knowledge from environmental science, public health, policy development, and community engagement to address lead pollution comprehensively is desirable - Work experience in implementing environmental projects involving various partners, clients and stakeholders is desirable. - Experience of the United Nations system in particular UNEP is an asset.

- English is the working language of UNEP. Fluent written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of another UN language would be an asset.
