As part of the research project “Tackling fibrosis in multiple organs via local administration of composite drug delivery systems”, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), one Ph.D. position is available in the research group of Prof. Luciani at the University of Bern, with starting date as soon as possible.

**Background**:
All organs undergo tissue repair through a complex multi-step mechanism involving the production of fibrotic tissue, resulting from a temporary increase in the deposition of components of the extracellular matrix (ECM), such as collagen and fibronectin. This process, a pivotal part of the wound healing response, may become aberrant when the injury is severe or repetitive, leading to an abnormal accumulation of ECM. Organ fibrosis is reported to account for ~45% of deaths in the Global North, but to date only two antifibrotic drugs have been approved in Europe and in the US.
Research project:
Taking advantage of the experience gained by our group during the past years in investigating liver fibrosis, ulcerative colitis and in developing vaginal dosage forms, we propose three distinct tailored therapeutic approaches for liver, intestine and endometrium. The doctoral students will work with biomaterials, additive manufacturing, cell culture techniques, extracellular vesicles, omics technologies and will learn how to develop advanced therapeutics for the treatment of fibrosis in a multidisciplinary environment in close collaboration with preclinical and clinical laboratories.
Education and profile:

- has previous experience with cell culture techniques, preferably with extracellular vesicles
- is able to collaborate in an interdisciplinary manner with different research teams
- is proactive and highly motivated, interested in exploring new technologies, and accepts challenging tasks
- is fluent in English
- is keen to teach and mentor undergraduate students in lab courses and research internships

**Research project**:
