DescriptionOverview Reporting to the VP, Ethics & Compliance and Chief Privacy Officer, who is based in Massachusetts, USA, the Director will support the design, implementation, and enhancement of an effective Ethics and Compliance program for regions outside the US and conduct all regulatory required activities as the Alnylam EU, Swiss & UK Data Protection Officer (DPO) to ensure that the applicable data protection rules are respected. The Director will work closely with colleagues in the broader Ethics & Compliance team, and with regional Legal, Information Technology, Human Resources, Finance, and business colleagues to sustain Alnylam’s strong ethical culture and ensure employee adherence to the Company’s Code of Conduct and related rules, policies, and procedures.This role is based in Zug, Switzerland.

This is a hybrid role which requires in office presence 2-3 days per week on average.The Data Protection Officer (DPO) is responsible for ensuring the protection of personal data within the organization and will serve as the primary point of contact for data protection matters, both internally and externally. The DPO ensures compliance with data protection laws, regulations, and best practices, and plays a crucial role in managing risks associated with data privacy.As a member of the Ethics and Compliance function, this role will be expected to understand and implement elements of a compliance program.Summary of Key ResponsibilitiesPartner with employees and country, regional and global leadership to maintain and further develop a strong culture of ethics and compliance, including personal accountability at all levels in the organization with a spirit of partnership and positive problem solving.Foster a data protection culture within the organization and help to implement essential elements of data protection laws and regulations applicable in the region, including but not limited to the EU, Switzerland and UK by insuring compliance with the data protection principles, facilitating the exercise of data subjects’ rights, complying with the principles of data protection by design and by default,

maintaining records of processing activities, ensuring security of processing, complying with data breach reporting obligations and cooperating with respective data protection authorities.Execute DPO activities and responsibilities in accordance with the DPO operating rules including executing critical tasks such as advising the company and employees of data protection obligations; monitoring compliance and training relevant team members; advising on data protection impact assessment audits and monitoring performance; cooperating and consulting with data protection authorities; serving as point of contact for data subjects and data protection authorities; identifying and assessing data processing risks.Develop and/or update and implement appropriate data privacy and data protection policies and procedures and guidelines to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations and industry codes and alignment with global policies to safeguard personal data.Prepare and deliver training and education to ensure understanding of employee responsibilities related to privacy and data protection issues, as well as related policies and procedures.Execute routine and risk-based assessment, monitoring and auditing of relevant business activities and related policies and procedures; identify potential areas of compliance vulnerability and risk; assist in and oversee the implementation of corrective action plans as necessary; and generate reports on monitoring, auditing, and risk assessment.Support investigations into allegations of misconduct, as required.Recruit, manage and develop one or more direct reports as applicable. Manage non-direct reports in a matrixed environment. Provide oversight of vendors or other third parties.Other responsibilities may be assigned from time to time at the company’s discretion.Travel required.QualificationsBachelor’s Degree required (Legal or other relevant degree). European Data Protection certification a plus. Minimum of 10 years of ethics, compliance legal and/or data privacy experience in an organization subject to biopharmaceutical, medical device or other relevant healthcare compliance laws and regulations.Experience as a Data Protection Officer (DPO) in a biotech/pharmaceutical company Expertise in national and European data protection laws and practices and an in-depth understanding of the EU, Swiss and UK frameworks.A solid background in privacy and data protection principles, practices, and frameworks is essential. Several years of experience in data protection program management commensurate with the sensitivity, complexity, and amount of data the employer processes.Experience working in multiple EU countries and knowledge of applicable country-specific regulation, as well as foreign healthcare fraud and abuse laws (e.g., UK Bribery Act, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, IFPMA, EFPIA Guidelines). International biopharmaceutical compliance experience a plus.Familiarity with privacy and security risk assessment and best practices, privacy certifications/seals, and information security standards certifications. Information Security experience a plus.Sound understanding of and familiarity with information technology programming and infrastructure, and information security practices and audits.Integrity and high professional ethics and ability to handle information and business affairs confidentially as appropriate.Demonstrated leadership and project management experience.Ability to interact effectively with data subjects, data protection authorities and other controllers and processors across national boundaries and cultures.Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally with the highest levels of management and decision-making within the organization and to work collaboratively and cross-functionally in a team environment with a wide variety of company personnel within the region and across the broader organization on a broad range of matters, including physicians, scientists, and individuals of different nationalities.
