Job Description:

Introduction

Are you an enthusiastic engineer interested in the development and manufacturing of normal conducting accelerator magnets? Join a great team pushing the limits of this technology

Normal conducting magnets operate at room temperature and are at the core of the FCC lepton collider. Within CERN's Technology Department (TE), the group has the mandate to design, construct, and test superconducting and normal conducting magnets for the accelerator complex. This includes overseeing the design, integration, procurement, and ensuring magnet performance and maintenance.

Join a great team ensuring the reliable operation and upgrade of all normal conducting magnets on the CERN accelerator complex.

Functions

As a magnet engineer with expertise in normal conducting accelerator magnets, you will:

  1. Develop cost-effective technologies for normal conducting magnets, focusing on prototyping and integration into the Future Circular Collider (FCC);
  2. Study and propose manufacturing and procurement strategies for FCC magnets, tailored to project scale for efficient production, installation, and maintenance;
  3. Plan, organize and direct the maintenance, repair, testing, and modification of existing magnets in operation, applying lessons learned to FCC magnets.

Qualifications

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in electro-mechanical engineering or a related field.

Experience:

We are looking for a magnet engineer with the following experience:

  • Proven experience in the design and construction of normal conducting accelerator magnets;
  • Experience in the procurement of normal conducting magnets, either in industry or in a laboratory;
  • Experience analyzing mechanical and magnetic measurements and implementing lessons learned in design.
  • Design and modeling of normal conducting magnets and permanent magnet systems;
  • Construction, testing, and installation of electromechanical equipment and systems;
  • Operation and maintenance of normal conducting magnet systems;
  • Design and analysis of mechanical structures;
  • Knowledge and application of magnetic materials and electric insulation.

Skills:

  • Demonstrating Accountability: taking responsibility for actions and decisions; delivering on promises;
  • Communicating Effectively: providing timely information and ensuring documentation of procedures and decisions;
  • Learning and Sharing Knowledge: proposing improvements and sharing expertise freely;
  • Working in Teams: participating fully in team activities and promoting a positive atmosphere;
  • Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting to shifting priorities and proposing improved ways of working.

Spoken and written English in a professional context, with a willingness to learn French.

Additional Information

This vacancy will be filled as soon as possible, and applications should reach us no later than 15.01.2025 at 23.45 Geneva time.
