Job Description

Your responsibilities

Are you ready to take on a unique challenge in cutting-edge technology? Join us as a Mechanical Designer and contribute to the development of next-generation superconducting magnets for future accelerators, including ground-breaking medical applications.

About the project

In the superconducting magnet technology section (TE-MSC-SMT), we push the boundaries of superconducting magnet design and manufacturing. These magnets rely on materials with extraordinary electrical and mechanical properties, presenting unique challenges that demand creativity, precision, and specialized tools.

About the role

As a Mechanical Designer, you will play a key role in designing, testing, and optimizing mechanical systems and tooling critical for manufacturing advanced magnet components. In the first phase, your work will directly contribute to the development of a demonstrator dipole for a next-generation medical accelerator magnet.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and Engineering: Develop mechanical designs for magnet components, assembly tooling, and production processes, incorporating advanced techniques such as additive manufacturing.
  • Manufacturing Support: Design specialized tooling for coil winding, heat treatment in controlled gas environments, vacuum impregnation, brazing, and high-precision assembly of delicate components.
  • Collaboration: Partner with engineers and technical teams to transform concepts into practical, manufacturable solutions.
  • Quality Assurance: Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) standards to ensure the precision and compatibility of designs.
  • Technical Expertise: Utilize CATIA (or equivalent 3D CAD software) to create parametric models and detailed technical drawings that meet ISO standards.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative team at the forefront of superconducting magnet development, where your skills will help shape the future of accelerator and medical technologies.

Your profile

Skills and competencies:

  • Additive manufacturing
  • Tooling for superconducting magnets
  • Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Proficiency in creating technical drawing (to ISO standards) and parametric CAD modelling (CATIA software)
  • Innovative problem solving
  • Teamwork
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You have a professional background in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) and have either: a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience; or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Additional Information

Job closing date: 5th of January at 23:59 (midnight) CET.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Field of work: Mechanical Engineering

What we offer

  • A monthly stipend ranging between 6212 and 6828 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
  • Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.
  • 30 days of paid leave per year.
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on
