Genf, Genf, Schweiz CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research Vollzeit
Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

As an Applied Physicist specialised in particle detectors, you will join the Experimental Physics (EP) department, specifically the CERN Detector Group of the ATLAS experiment, a general-purpose detector exploiting the unique physics potential of the LHC as it concludes its Run 3 and enters its High-Luminosity phase. The Calorimeter section of the Detector Group has a leading role in the operation of the Liquid Argon (LAr) Calorimeter, the installation and commissioning of its Phase-II upgrade for HL-LHC as well as R&D activities for new calorimeter developments to be used in future accelerators.

The responsibilities within the LAr calorimeter project of ATLAS will mainly be:

  • The operation of the LAr calorimeter, especially its electronics, trigger electronics and associated software and firmware, for the remainder of Run-3.
  • The on-site preparations for the Phase-II Upgrade of the LAr electronics at CERN as host lab and in the ATLAS cavern.
  • The installation and commissioning of the LAr Calorimeter precision readout as well as the LAr Trigger electronics for Run-4.

Functions

You will:

  • Take a leading role in the operation of the LAr calorimeter, supervising a CERN-based team of technicians, students, and scientists.
  • Coordinate efforts at CERN for all tests, including reception of deliverables and system tests, needed for the construction of the new LAr electronics for HL-LHC.
  • Lead preparations for installation and commissioning of the new LAr electronics on the ATLAS detector, transitioning current software and firmware to the upgraded electronics.
  • Contribute to simulation, design, and development efforts related to Noble Liquid Calorimeters for future detectors.

In due time, you will be one of the leading physicists within the team for the installation, commissioning, and operation of the upgraded LAr Calorimeter.

Qualifications

PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Physics, with specialization in particle detectors or a related field.

Experience:

  • Proven post-doctoral experience in the development and operation of particle physics detectors, especially calorimeters.
  • Experience with installing and commissioning new subdetector electronics and integrating a system within a particle collider experiment.
  • Demonstrated experience in particle detector data analysis, particularly regarding detector operation and performance.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware firmware and software for detectors, detector control, and readout.
  • Experience in coordinating multi-disciplinary teams of physicists, engineers, and technicians.
  • Experience in developing data acquisition, data handling, and analysis for detector and electronics tests.
  • Knowledge of calorimetry methods and techniques.
  • Experience in assembly and integration of detectors.
  • Experience in simulation, design, and development of detectors.
  • Experience in analyzing and optimizing detector performance.
  • Experience in developing data acquisition, handling, and analysis for detector operation and readout.
  • Ability to work in teams, promoting a constructive atmosphere and addressing issues.
  • Ability to achieve results by managing projects, dividing tasks, and adapting plans as necessary.
  • Ability to manage self, demonstrating receptiveness to feedback and maintaining focus in stressful environments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, delivering presentations clearly and adjusting style for the audience.
  • Ability to solve problems by assimilating information and formulating conclusions concisely.

Spoken and written English: ability to understand and speak in professional contexts. Ability to draw up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations. Willingness to learn and improve French.
