Genf, Schweiz Beams Vollzeit
Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on CERN's website.

Job Description

Introduction

With about 50 km of accelerator infrastructure and over 160 high energy and nuclear physics experiments, CERN is home to the world-wide largest network of Radiation Areas. Are you passionate about your job as a Radiation Protection Technician? Would you like to participate in a dynamic multi-national team of radiation protection specialists? Contribute your skills and expertise to radiation protection at the world's largest particle accelerator complex. Take Part

The Radiation Protection (RP) Group of the Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Protection (HSE) Unit ensures that personnel on the CERN sites and the public are protected from potentially harmful effects of ionizing radiation linked to CERN activities. The duties of CERN’s Radiation Protection Group include the assessment of radiation hazards from operating accelerators and experiments, the definition of protective measures, as well as the legally required monitoring of the exposure of radiation workers and the public to ionising radiation.

Functions

As a Radiation Protection Technician in the RP Accelerator and Sites Section (RP-AS) you will:

  • Assess radiological risks at workplaces in accelerator tunnels, experimental areas, laboratories, storage areas, and workshops of CERN, elaborate dose prevention and dose minimisation measures, including the radiological characterisation of potentially radioactive materials and waste.
  • Perform radiation measurements in various, static and dynamic high energy, multi-particle radiation fields.
  • Perform work and dose planning and elaborate protection measures as well as work procedures.
  • Evaluate, analyse, and follow up operational dosimetry data.
  • Contribute to the drafting and updating of radiation protection documents and procedures.
  • Advise personnel on radiation protection matters.
Qualifications

Higher technical diploma, bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Radiation Protection or a related field.

Experience:

The experience required for this post is:

  • Demonstrated experience in operational radiation protection, radiation protection instrumentation and legislation.
  • Proven skills in documenting radiological risk assessments and measurements.
  • Knowledge of regulatory framework and best practices in radiation protection.
  • Knowledge of dosimetry in mixed radiation fields: extensive knowledge of measurement techniques of ionizing radiation.
  • Knowledge of personal dosimetry.
  • Knowledge of radiation safety.
  • Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team and participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
  • Communicating Effectively: ensuring that information, procedures, and decisions are appropriately documented and providing others with timely information as well as selecting the appropriate medium and forum to communicate.
  • Achieving Results: delivering prompt and efficient service taking into account customer needs and having a structured and organised approach towards work while being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
  • Learning and Sharing Knowledge: keeping up-to-date with developments in own field of expertise and readily absorbing new information and creating or participating in forums to exchange experience, comparing techniques and learn from others.

Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts would be an advantage or the willingness to acquire it rapidly.
