For the PSI Center for Accelerator Science and Engineering, we are looking for a:
Your tasksWith the observation of intra-beam scattering (IBS) in the SwissFEL injector and new understanding in how to model IBS, the question is whether for future electron sources we need to rethink the optimization process which generally aims to reduce beam emittance and increase peak current. This project will investigate the use of IBS in modeling electron sources, using the TW gun under development at PSI as an example, to understand whether there is a regime where the optimization process must consider IBS. For example, how the combined effect of IBS and beam size affects the slice energy spread in the waist of the emittance compensation scheme. During your trainee work, you will be integrated into a small team to conduct numerical simulations of beam dynamics including IBS using existing tools.
Your profile- You are a student in engineering or physics, and you are at least in your penultimate year of undergraduate study (minimum 4 semesters).
- You are interested and motivated in innovative accelerator technologies and beam dynamics.
- You have not yet completed your Master’s thesis.
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. The contract will be limited to 3 months.
