At Neurosoft Bioelectronics, we are building implantable brain-computer interfaces (iBCIs) aimed at addressing severe neurological conditions, leveraging novel materials designed to enhance long-term functionality within the human body. Despite advancements in our understanding of neuronal activity, decoding brain signals in a clear and reliable way remains a complex challenge.

We have gathered specific datasets of brain activity recorded from animal models, and more recently, from human subjects using our iBCIs. To advance our research, we are investigating how advanced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, including foundation models across various modalities, can be used to improve decoding of these neuronal signals.

We are looking to test various strategies using AI foundation models to decode brain activity. This project shall span over a year and will involve the following steps:

  • Data and meta-data curation, preparation, and formatting to match models’ inputs — this will be done in-house at Neurosoft Bioelectronics based at Campus Biotech, in Geneva, Switzerland ( 1–3 months)
  • Development and tuning of a large-scale neuronal decoding model that can effectively combine brain datasets from different sources — in collaboration with an external partner institution ( 6–9 months)
  • Model testing, fine-tuning, and decoding of brain data ( 3–6 months)
Tasks

We are looking for a motivated individual currently enrolled in a study program at EPFL (or at a similar technical institution) willing to split their time into a full-time 6-month paid internship at Neurosoft Bioelectronics, followed by a 6-month MSc thesis in collaboration with selected laboratories from the Neuro-X institute, under scientific supervision at Neurosoft Bioelectronics and their partner institution.

Requirements

Education and experience: Ongoing MSc studies (preferably prior to MSc thesis) in one of the Neuro-X laboratories or within another closely related EPFL laboratory.

Specific skills:

  • Strong experience with AI models (e.g., adaptive transformers) and/or currently attending specific advanced machine learning courses
  • Background in basic human neuroscience and/or willing to learn about auditory neuroscience
  • Ease & experience with code or data handling tools (e.g., python, MATLAB, …)
  • Ease & experience with machine learning and deep learning models and tools (e.g., transformer architecture, deep learning models, CNNs, …)
  • Willingness to collaborate with students and supervisors from partner institution outside of EPFL
  • Good communication skills and language level (at least B2) in English, French is a plus
  • Willingness to strive in a fast-paced start-up environment
Benefits

The full-time 6-month paid internship will start either as soon as possible or in February 2025 based on the semester schedule.

If successfully completed, the internship will be followed by a 6-month full-time MSc thesis opportunity in collaboration with (a) selected laboratory(-ies) from the Neuro-X institute at EPFL.

A financial compensation from Neurosoft Bioelectronics could potentially be provided during the MSc thesis.
