These two positions are located in the Engineering Unit, Facilities Management Section, Central Support Services, Division of Administration, United Nations Office at Geneva. The incumbent will report to the Chief, Facilities Management Section.

Responsibilities

  1. Applies commonly used engineering calculations, practices and precedents in completing portions of larger projects related to the design, construction, or repair of buildings, roads, bridges, airfields, helipads, railways, docks, waste disposal systems, flood control systems, water treatment facilities, electrical power generation and distribution systems, environmental control systems, field defenses, mine detection and clearance, and other related structures and activities in the field.
  2. Plans and designs specifications for projects. Drafts terms of reference and technical evaluation reports.
  3. Conducts preliminary site investigations to obtain field data such as soil characteristics, drainage and other data required for building site selection.
  4. Prepares design layout for smaller or less complex portions of buildings and facilities.
  5. Develops technical data regarding materials, sizes, dimensions, and quantities and costs to be incorporated in formal specifications.
  6. Estimates costs of repairs of damaged buildings, facilities and systems to determine feasibility of repairs or replacement.
  7. Liaises with other engineers and mission specialists responsible for related specialized phases to arrive at mutually satisfactory approaches to problems by exchanging and comparing data.
  8. Conducts investigations to develop improved designs and construction techniques.
  9. Produces cost data and estimates on engineering-related requirements of current and planned field missions.
  10. Analyzes project proposals to ensure technical feasibility and to ensure that project objectives are attainable within prescribed resources.
  11. Conducts research on development of new technical systems and follows development to identify improved methods and equipment.
  12. Ensures the liaison between the SHP (Strategic Heritage Plan) and FMS (Facilities Management Section) teams, as required.
  13. Collaborates with the SHP/FMS teams by taking into account the SHP project needs, submits them to the FMS team, and provides to the SHP team the requested, coordinated and validated information.
  14. Comes up with the coordinated FMS recommendations in order to ensure consistency between the proposed new installations and the existing ones.
  15. Communicates costs benchmark based on UNOG current maintenance contracts and coordinates cost information with FMS to avoid any duplication of works and budgets.
  16. Reviews quality and completeness of technical O&M (operation and maintenance) manuals, PMPs (preventive maintenance plan), Training Plans, record drawings, testing and commissioning information, manufacturer’s literature given to FMS on completion of the project.
  17. Ensures additional technical operation and maintenance tasks, processes and procedures are integrated into the overall operation and maintenance strategy.
  18. Provides information for tenders / bids for specialist maintenance and other service contracts required by UNOG.

Knowledge of industry standard maintenance requirements for MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing) systems. Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in engineering or related fields is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Job - Specific Qualification: A specialization in mechanical engineering (heating, ventilation, air conditioning and buildings management system) or electrical engineering is desirable.

Work Experience: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in engineering or related area is required. Progressively responsible experience in mechanical engineering (heating, ventilation, air conditioning and building management system) is desirable. Experience in the UN common system or similar international organizations is desirable. Experience in renovation and upgrading of existing buildings' facilities (such as power installations, electronic security installations, sanitary installations, energy management, building management system projects) is desirable. Experience in controls system testing and commissioning is desirable.

Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Assessment: Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
