Position Summary:

The Director, Field Excellence and Training – EMEA is responsible for developing and executing training, coaching, and field excellence strategies for medical and commercial teams across the EMEA region. This critical role requires building and evolving field capabilities, fostering collaboration across diverse markets, and ensuring the consistent alignment of regional and local field activities with Ultragenyx’s overarching goals.

This position involves creating and implementing a comprehensive measurement framework, such as a Field Coaching Report, to track and enhance the performance and effectiveness of field teams. The role also includes designing and delivering new hire training and continuous education programs for multiple brands, ensuring field teams stay equipped with the skills and knowledge required to excel.

Significant time spent in the field with teams is essential, alongside close collaboration with cluster General Managers (GMs), Medical Cluster Leads, EMEA brand teams, and other cross-functional leaders.

Work Model:

Flex: This role will typically require onsite work 2-3 days each week, or more depending on business needs. In many locations, the business will set certain days each week that Flex employees are required to be onsite.

Responsibilities:

Field Training and Development

  • Design and deliver comprehensive training programs for new hires and existing team members to build and enhance their capabilities across multiple brands.
  • Develop continuing education programs to ensure medical and commercial field teams stay up-to-date with the latest therapeutic, market, and competitive insights.
  • Create and implement a coaching framework, including tools like a Field Coaching Report, to support skill development and track progress.
  • Tailor training programs to address the specific needs and skill levels of diverse markets across the EMEA region.

Field Excellence and Strategy

  • Partner with EMEA brand teams and cluster GMs and Medical Cluster Leads, to build critical business capabilities and ensure alignment of field activities with brand and regional strategies.
  • Establish and continuously evolve field excellence initiatives to optimize the performance of medical and commercial field teams.
  • Drive initiatives that promote collaboration and alignment between medical and commercial teams, ensuring shared goals and objectives.

Collaboration and Cross-Functional Engagement

  • Act as a strategic partner for EMEA leadership, ensuring field training and development programs align with EMEA objectives and cluster priorities.
  • Collaborate with the global and regional brand teams to integrate brand strategies into training and coaching plans.

Field Engagement and Coaching

  • Spend significant time working alongside field teams in their respective markets to understand challenges, provide hands-on coaching, and observe best practices.
  • Act as a mentor to field teams, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Performance Measurement and Optimization

  • Establish KPIs and other metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of training and field excellence initiatives.
  • Regularly analyze performance data and gather feedback to optimize training strategies and coaching frameworks.
  • Ensure measurable improvements in field team capabilities, engagement, and performance.
Requirements:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Life Sciences, Marketing, or a related field is required.
  • Advanced degree (MBA, MSc, or equivalent) is preferred.

Experience

  • 8+ years of experience in field training, coaching, or field excellence roles in the biopharmaceutical, healthcare, or related industries.
  • Previous field experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working across diverse geographies and markets, particularly in EMEA.
  • Proven ability to design and implement training and coaching programs for medical and commercial teams.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong scientific acumen.
  • Strong coaching and mentoring skills, with a track record of fostering individual and team development.
  • Excellent cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder management capabilities.
  • Deep understanding of EMEA healthcare systems, regulatory environments, and cultural dynamics.
  • Proficiency in designing measurement frameworks and tracking the impact of training and coaching initiatives.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to balance strategic vision and hands-on execution.
  • Fluent in English; knowledge of additional EMEA languages is an advantage.

Additional Information

  • Travel: Frequent travel (up to 40%) across EMEA to engage with field teams and stakeholders is required.
  • Full compliance with Ultragenyx’s policies, industry regulations, and applicable laws is mandatory.
