The Position – Flight Dynamics EngineerThe Mission Operations (MOps) team is responsible pre-launch mission analysis and operating the SAGE CubeSat while it’s in space. Within the MOps team, the Flight Dynamics Engineer is responsible for orbit determination (“Where is the satellite now?”), orbit propagation (“Where will the satellite be later?”), and maintaining the software that enables these tasks.Prior to launch, the Flight Dynamics Engineer will simulate the orbit of SAGE based on periodically changing data from the launch provider (i.e., SpaceX) and provide updated mission analyses. Following launch, the Flight Dynamics Engineer will perform orbit determination and propagation and notify the mission director any important changes. We currently use NASA’s open-source General Mission Analysis Tool (GMAT) to simulate SAGE’s orbit. In the upcoming months, the Flight Dynamics Engineer will integrate this tool into the Mission Operations pipeline. The goal is to automate the process insofar as possible.This is a great opportunity to learn about orbital dynamics and space mission operations. The Flight Dynamics Engineer will be working at the heart of a skilled and enthusiastic team of engineers and scientists and will be contributing to a real space mission.What you should bring:- Comfortable with the Python programming language
- (Basic) knowledge of orbital dynamics
- Capable of automating complex tasks
- Ideal field(s) of study: Astronomy, Physics, Computer Science
