JOB DESCRIPTION

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on

Job Description

Introduction

Are you willing to become a key player in power converters field? Join CERN's Electrical Power Converter Group (EPC) and leave your mark on the development/operation of the electrical systems for CERN's particle accelerators. Take part

You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.

The Electrical Power Converter Group (EPC) in the Systems Department (SY) is responsible for the electrical power systems for the entire CERN accelerator complex.

You will join the Low Power Converter Section (SY-EPC-LPC), responsible for almost all converters used in the famous LHC machine, in the range of 1 kW to 50 kW. You will participate in the design of future converters for the HL-LHC machine and be involved in delivering complete powering systems to small CERN physics experiences over CERN complex.

Functions

As a technician specialised in electromechanical engineering, you will be a member of the team responsible for the design, development, production, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of CERN's power converters.

You will:

  • Take part in the design and 3D modelling of low to medium power range, high switching frequency power converters;
  • Construct, test and install power converters;
  • Collaborate with both internal and external partners;
  • Participate in the commissioning of power converters;
  • Organise and direct the operation and maintenance of these systems;
  • Participate in fault-finding and corrective interventions;
  • Ensure that all necessary safety measures are taken on work sites.

Qualifications

Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electromechanical or mechanical engineering, power electronics or a related field.

Experience:

Required experience:

  • Use of CAD tools for the creation of mechanical schematics and 3-D drawings;
  • Installation, commissioning, operation or maintenance of electrical power equipment.

Desired experience:

  • Design of power converters or power electronics;
  • Use of CAD tools for the creation of electrical schematics.

Technical competencies:

  • Design of electromechanical systems;
  • Assembly of electronic crates, racks and cabinets;
  • Construction, test and installation of power electronic components and systems;
  • Operation and maintenance of power electronic components and systems.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
  • Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations.
  • Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
  • Communicating effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in routine situations.

Willingness to acquire knowledge of the other language rapidly.

Additional Information

Eligibility and closing date:
