The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP is the United Nations system's designated entity that addresses environmental issues at the global and regional levels.

Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and to the international community for action.

The position is located in the Funds Management, Administration and Human Resources (FMAHR) Branch of the Secretariats of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, three Multilateral Environmental Agreements administered by UNEP, and based in Geneva.

The Branch is responsible for the overall management of funds, human resources and administration, and include institutional & corporate legal affairs, among other functions.

The internship in the Secretariats of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions / UNEP is for 6 (six) months.

The Internship is for 6 months and UNPAID.

Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Responsibilities:

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the legal officer, the intern will primarily provide legal assistance in implementing the Programmes of Work of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, i.

e.

by assisting the legal officer and as needed, other relevant team members of the FMAHR Branch of the Secretariats of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions.

The selected intern may also provide support to other relevant secretariat staff members, as necessary.

Tasks will include, without being limited to:

  • legal assistance and support in general; more specifically:
  • collecting and reviewing legal information (e.g. in due diligence review);
- conducting legal research and analysis;
- editing, drafting and reviewing legal instruments, letters and other legal documents or materials such as presentations, reports, etc.;
- assisting in preparing, organising, and participating in relevant meetings and other events, such as the 2023 meetings of the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) to the BRS Conventions;
- as well as other legal tasks as may be required.

Areas of work may include:
- general international law;
- law of international organisations;
- corporate and institutional legal matters (e.g. contract drafting and review);
- administrative law;
- labour law;
- financial law e.g. arrears as to the assessed contributions due by Parties to the BRS Conventions;
- law of communications, intellectual property (IP)/information technology (IT), e.g. as to requests for use of the three BRS Conventions' respective names, acronyms, emblems or logos;
- as well as any other legal areas as may be assigned.
