Center for Biomedical Engineering Research invites software engineer student applications
with a strong background in programming to work on innovative surgical technology.
We seek enthusiastic candidates with excellent technical skills to join our research group.
The appointee will pursue the design, implementation, and maintenance of software
solutions for a novel interventional diagnostic technology. An important part of the objectives will be to develop software solutions that provide real-time diagnostics to surgical and medical staff during cancer surgery. No previous experience in healthcare is necessary – only a desire to learn and innovate in the field.
Required experience and skills
Strong Python development skills. Familiarity with Git and GitHub. Good English language skills, both written and verbal. Other desirable (but not required) skills
Familiarity with fundamental concepts of functional programming. Experience with UI development, especially with the Qt/Qt Quick frameworks. Ability to understand code written with the NumPy and PyTorch libraries. Experience with systems development languages such as C++ or Rust. Possession of a GitHub account with demonstrable projects (personal or professional).

competitive research with an interdisciplinary team. Strongly linked to the Bern University Hospital (Inselspital) and part of the new Center for AI in Medicine, the AIMI lab strives to provide a coherent and holistic view of how AI in healthcare can benefit patients by designing and developing fundamental and translation research.
More about the positions
The positions are funded for 1 year at first, possibly extending thereafter. The start date is expected as soon as possible. The position is intended for a student looking for a 30-40% capacity, with the possibility to increase worktime to 80-100% during the off-semester periods.
Strong communication skills in English are required, as it is the working language of the ARTORG center. Free German courses are available for those wishing to learn. There are no associated teaching duties, but opportunities are possible for those interested.
