The internship is located in the Environment Division, Transboundary Cooperation Section, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, based in Geneva, Switzerland.


UNECE Environment Division contributes to the overall objectives and mandate of UNECE as a multilateral platform facilitating greater economic integration and cooperation among its member States, and to the broad aim of the Environment subprogramme to safeguard the environment and human health, and to promote sustainable development in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.


Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Legal Officer, the intern is expected to contribute to the Environment Division through the work of the secretariat of the Convention on the Use and Protection on Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention) and its Protocol on Water and Health (Protocol) as follows:
a) Support the preparation and organization of meetings of the bodies under the Convention and the Protocol, as well as workshops, such as:
i. Strategic Roundtable on Climate Change under the Protocol on 18-19 April 2023;
ii. 29th meeting of the Bureau of the Protocol on Water and Health on 20-21 April 2023;
iii. Global Network of Basins on Climate Change meeting on 25-26 May 2023;
iv. 18th Meeting of the Working Group on Integrated Water Resources Management on 19-21 June 2023;
v. 34th meeting of the Bureau of the Water Convention on 22-23 June 2023;
vi. Support other regional workshops, national workshops and webinars as needed;
b) Support the implementation of country projects and activities under the Water Convention and the Protocol on Water and Health, depending on needs, including possible support to:
i. preparations for the 2023 UN Water Conference on 22-24 March 2023;
ii. the work on SDG indicator 6.5.2 as required, including the third reporting exercise;
iii. support other activities as required;
c) Assist with the preparation of outreach materials, articles and publications on the Water Convention and its Protocol on Water and Health;
d) Provide general assistance to the secretariat with day-to-day tasks, as required (e.g. drafting of documents, updating the web site, desk research on identified issues, correspondence with country experts and partners, project reporting, etc.).

Education
To qualify for the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
For this internship, studies in environment, water management, development, international law, international relations or equivalent are required. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French, Russian, Spanish, or Arabic is an asset.
