As a sustainability and innovation intern, you will work on cutting-edge projects that align with our commitment to environmental responsibility, social impact, and forward-thinking solutions.

The goal of Group Safety, Security, Health and Environmental Protection (SHE) is to ensure business continuity and SHE compliance, protecting the safety and health of employees and the public, as well as the environment from hazards associated with our business processes. 

This three-month project focuses on our dependencies on natural resources used in the pharmaceutical industry. We rely on natural resources (e.g. palm oil, timber, horseshoe crab blood) during the production of our medicines and for our medicinal/diagnostic products. But sourcing of natural material might contribute besides others to deforestation, pollution and social impacts for the local community. In order to understand and prevent any negative environmental/social impact we have to unveil our use of natural products and identify the country of origin. 

You will start high level identifying of natural resources used in the healthcare sector, followed by identifying which of these materials are used by Roche. The collected data will comprise what kind of natural material, how much and from where the natural material originates. Finally, a proposal will be outlined on how a sustainable tracking system for natural material could be integrated, incl. schema for these natural materials and their properties by leveraging open source information. This internship position is located in Switzerland on site / hybrid.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify natural resources used in the healthcare sector, including the complex supply chain (hidden natural resources)

  • Assess where these natural resources originate and what impacts they may have

  • Establish a priority scheme (e.g. volume, country of origin, impact)  to identify the most relevant natural resources  

  • Outline a tracking system for natural resources, incl. procurement suggestions to prevent negative impacts

Who You Are

 

You are enrolled or have completed your Master’s studies at a university, preferably in the field of natural science (e.g. biology, chemistry, geography) within the last 12 months and are interested in applying your knowledge in a modern working environment as part of an internship of at least 3 months and getting to know the pharmaceutical industry.

Furthermore you are

  • Strong interested in data mining (i.e. extraction of data from various data sources) and data analysis, plus data interpretation

  • Highly self-motivated and able to work independently

  • Strong communication skills

  • Fluent English skills required
