Job Description

Your responsibilities

In this role you will be part of the LHCb Detector Group (LBD) in the Experimental Physics Department (EP). The LHCb experiment, one of the four large experiments at the LHC, is specialized in investigating the tiny difference between matter and anti-matter and searching for hints of new physics.

This position is dedicated to the evaluation of the radiation environment the LHCb detector will have to operate at following its future upgrades. These upgrades will allow the detector to make more precise measurements and operate at much higher proton-proton luminosities. The latter implies a corresponding increase of the radiation load the detectors will be subjected to. Changes in sub-detectors materials will influence the radiation environment in a non-trivial manner. The radiation impact, and potential mitigations, are an essential ingredient in the choice of technologies being considered.

In this position you will:

Take care of the LHCb FLUKA model. Perform particle shower simulations to determine the radiation environment for the detector upgrades. Evaluate the radiation impact of mitigation strategies relevant for electronics of different sub-detectors. Ensure coherent up-to-date information is available to the different LHCb sub-systems.

Experience with simulation of radiation environments. Knowledge of particle-matter interactions. Knowledge of programming techniques and languages (i.e. bash, python, git). Knowledge of at least one Monte Carlo code (FLUKA, etc.) is an asset. Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

You are a national of a . You have a professional background in Nuclear/particle physics (or a related field) and have either:a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Additional Information

Job closing date: June 12 at 23:59 PM CEST.

Job reference: EP-LBD-2024-107-GRAP

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Target start date: 01-September-2024

What we offer

A monthly stipend ranging between 6212 and 6828 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax) . Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund . Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract. 30 days of paid leave per year . On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on
