Applied Physicist on ATLAS Detector Safety System

Your responsibilities

You will be responsible for the maintenance and operations of the Detector Safety System.
Your main tasks will include:

  • Maintenance and operations of the Detector Safety System (DSS) common to all the LHC experiments.
  • Development of the simulation of the ATLAS infrastructure with an Expert System tool, including statistical interpretation of failures.
  • Installation and commissioning of new sensors and interlocks, in particular for the integration of Inner Tracker Detector (ITK) system.
  • Follow-up regular interventions involving the safety of the detector and safety systems including smoke, gas, oxygen deficiency and water leak.
  • Preparation of DSS upgrades planned for the Long Shutdown 3 including the review of safety procedures of the different ATLAS sub-systems.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Applied Physics (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Target start date: 01-October-2024

This position requires:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.

  • A monthly stipend ranging between 5134 and 5647 Swiss Francs (net of tax).
