The Chair of Alpine Mass Movements is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (D-BAUG) at ETH. The Research Group develop numerical models and experimental facilities to better understand the initiation and dynamics of alpine mass movements such as snow avalanches, debris flows and rockfalls. Our research contributes to improve risk assessment and management procedures related to gravitational mass movements in alpine regions and mitigate their impacts. We are looking for a (2 years)

PostDoc “Computational mechanics for alpine mass movements” 80-100% (f/m/d) You will support ongoing development and application of numerical models (three-dimensional and depth-averaged) for the dynamics of alpine mass movements such as avalanches (rock, snow or ice) or debris flow. This includes also their validation based on field observations and laboratory experiments. The successful candidate is expected to participate in teaching activities at ETH Zürich and should publish results in high-ranked scientific journals, present them at international conferences.

You hold a PhD degree in computational mechanics / physics and bring experience with continuum solid mechanics, and numerical methods for elastoplastic. You should be familiar with snow, avalanche, or granular mechanics research We seek candidates with strong skills in programming (C++ and Python) and software development practices (e.g., Git). Experience with developing and using the Material Point Method (MPM) is also required. A good publication record within the field and proven excellent oral as well written communication skills in English complete your profile. You have teaching and student supervision experience.
