The Chair of Alpine Mass Movements operates within the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (D-BAUG) at ETH.

The Research Group is dedicated to developing numerical models and experimental facilities to enhance comprehension of alpine mass movements like snow avalanches, debris flows, and rockfalls.

Our research aims to enhance risk assessment and management procedures concerning gravitational mass movements in alpine regions and to minimize associated impacts.

We are in search of a (2 years)

PostDoc "Computational mechanics for alpine mass movements" 80-100% (f/m/d)

You will be involved in advancing and employing numerical models (3D and depth-averaged) for alpine mass movement dynamics including avalanches (rock, snow, or ice) and debris flows.

  • Validation based on field observations and laboratory experiments is also part of the role.

The ideal candidate should contribute to teaching at ETH Zürich, publish in reputable scientific journals, and present findings at international conferences.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. in computational mechanics/physics, proficiency in continuum solid mechanics, and knowledge of numerical methods for elastoplastic.

  • Familiarity with snow, avalanche, or granular mechanics research is essential.
  • Competence in programming (C++ and Python) and software development (e.g., Git) is required.
  • Experience with Material Point Method (MPM) is mandatory.
  • A strong publication record and outstanding English communication skills are vital.
  • Teaching and student supervision background are preferred.
  • Interpersonal skills, a collaborative attitude, and team player capabilities are valued.
