General BackgroundPursuant to its protection and solutions mandate, UNHCR works on behalf of the 117.3 million people across the globe who have been displaced from their homes, including asylum-seekers, refugees, returnees, internally displaced persons, as well as stateless people. It maintains a presence in 137 countries. It ensures protection for forcibly displaced and provides services covering a range of sectors, from emergency assistance to longer-term development support. It also advocates for the inclusion of forcibly displaced persons into national and sectoral development plans to promote self-reliance. UNHCR works both to implement, by delivering assistance in conjunction with host Governments and within national systems, as well as to coordinate the overall refugee response with a wide array of partner organizations.UNHCR's needs-based budget in 2024 stands at over USD 10.6 billion.
