R&D Engineer

We are looking for a laser chip development engineer for vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) for consumer applications to expand our R&D team.

This role is based in the heart of Zurich, offering an exciting international environment and close collaboration with Coherent teams worldwide.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Create and develop VCSEL laser devices that can be used in advanced sensing technologies and AI applications.
• Ensure that the simulation models accurately represent the device's behavior and convert these models into practical, working designs.
• Plan, execute, and oversee experiments to test and confirm the effectiveness and performance of the VCSEL designs.
• Work closely with customers to understand their needs and performance criteria and deliver designs that not only meet but surpass their expectations.
• Create and apply methods and systems to precisely measure and evaluate the performance of the VCSEL devices.

Education & Experience

• PhD/MS or equivalent degree. Preferred with optoelectronics and semiconductor background and work experience.

Skills

• Technical expertise  in semiconductor, with solid understanding of semiconductor growth, processes, assembly, and test procedures.
• Device and material modelling 
• Tester setup for laser device characterisation
• Proficient in LabView, Matlab or Python and Comsol Multiphysics for simulation and      JMP for data analysis or equivalent programs.
• Strong interpersonal, teaming, and problem-solving skills.
• Work effectively with other members of different sites of Coherent Corp.
• Excellent English (required) and German language skills enabling effective communication across all levels of the organization.

Working Conditions

• Working conditions are normal for an open concept office environment and climate-controlled manufacturing cleanroom and R&D lab.
• Customer facing role.

Physical Requirements

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
• Work in a Class 100/1000 clean room and lab environment as needed. Wear appropriate PPE and complying with site safety protocols. Work with and/or around gases/chemicals, both hazardous and non-hazardous.
