Visiting Researcher, Linux Kernel Engineering

Meta is seeking a Visiting Researcher through a short-term contract to join the Linux Kernel team at Meta. The team is responsible for supporting, developing, and maintaining the Linux kernel that powers Meta's production infrastructure. Their work is critical to the reliability, performance, and scalability of Meta's global fleet of servers.

This position is short-term employment for PhD students who will work in collaboration with Meta and their University.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain Linux kernel modules, patches, and subsystems
  • Analyze and optimize kernel performance, scalability, and reliability
  • Work closely with the broader Linux community to develop features, fix bugs, and influence the direction of Linux kernel development
  • Investigate and resolve Linux-related performance issues and failures across Meta's infrastructure
  • Partner with internal teams to address reliability and efficiency challenges
  • Develop and maintain tooling to assist with kernel development, testing, build, and deployment
Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta
  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program in a technical field such as Computer Science or Computer Engineering
  • Experience in C++/C, Python, Shell, CUDA, Linux
  • Research experience in Operating Systems and Machine Learning Systems
  • Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding of Linux kernel architecture, subsystems (e.g., memory management, scheduling, networking, filesystems), and device drivers
  • Experience with kernel debugging tools (e.g., kgdb, crash, ftrace, perf)
