Robotics Mechanical Engineer (BE-CEM-MRO GRAP)
- Full-time
Your responsibilities
Within the Beams department (BE) the Controls Electronics and Mechatronics (CEM) group is responsible for the research, development and operations of a fleet of robotics systems used for inspection, maintenance and repair tasks.
Such systems require complex systems engineering to ensure their operation readiness, including aspects from motor configuration, electrical connections, battery status, network configuration, onboard computers, onboard software, the user interface and interfaces between the robot and infrastructure.
This position is focused on automation analysis of robotic equipment for the FCC accelerator facility and development of simulations and robotic systems for proof of concept studies.
Specifically, you will:
- Design robotic systems for simulations and proof of concept studies for FCC.
- Integrate robotic systems in the base line layout of the FCC.
- Determine the most efficient and cost-effective automation strategy to support the facility's long-term success.
- Run logistic simulations of robotic systems to understand access, timing and capacity.
- Support the identification of key robotic equipment across the entire FCC accelerator facility and the entire FCC life cycle, expanding beyond the current focus on the tunnel area during the operational phase.
Your profile
Skills
- Excellent background in robotics, including control, kinematics, dynamics, perception, and locomotion and state-of-the-art robotic solutions.
- Excellent knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and CAD design tools.
- Experience with FEA.
- Experience in project management, functional analysis, requirements analysis and application design is a plus.
- Hands-on experience in the deployment and integration of robotic systems is a plus.
- Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language.
Eligibility criteria:
- You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State .
- You have a professional background in Robotic Engineer (or a related field) and have either:
- a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
- or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
- You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
Job closing date: at 23:59h (midnight) CEST.
Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.
Working hours: 40 hours per week
Job reference: BE-CEM-MRO GRAP
Field of work: Software Engineering and IT
What we offer
- A monthly stipend ranging between 6287 and 6911 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax) .
- Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund .
- Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.
- 30 days of paid leave per year .
- On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.
About us
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on
