Company Description
At CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Job Description
Introduction
Are you an experienced, hands-on mechanical engineer with a passion for cutting-edge technologies and precision assemblies? Then seize this opportunity and join CERN's Experimental Physics (EP) Department, where you will take part in the development and construction of the next generation of particle detectors.
The CERN ATLAS Team plays a major role in the construction of the future silicon ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk). In particular, the CERN team focuses on the realisation of the Pixel Outer Barrel. These activities include the design, prototyping and assembly of the support structures and tooling as well as the final detector integration, installation and testing.
Functions
As a mechanical engineer in the CERN ATLAS Detector Team, you will join the Tracker section (EP-ADE-TK) and work closely with personnel from the Detector Technologies group (EP-DT) in the design and construction of the ATLAS ITk Pixel Outer Barrel. Your functions will include:
- Participate in the conception and detailed design of detector components, tooling and quality control infrastructure for the construction of the ITk Pixel Outer Barrel.
- Verify the design of components and tooling according to the relevant standards and best engineering practices, performing both analytical and numerical calculations.
- Develop, document, and implement tools and procedures for the assembly, installation, testing, and repair of detector components, sub-assemblies and services.
- Participate hands-on in the detector integration work in Building 154 and the ATLAS SR1 cleanroom, supporting the assembly, testing and installation activities.
- Prepare technical specifications for detector components and tools, following up their production, acceptance and installation.
Qualifications
Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical or aerospace engineering or a related field.
Experience:
- Proven experience in the design of precision mechanical components and assembly tools for complex systems. Previous work experience with particle detectors would be considered advantageous.
- Demonstrated experience in the use of CAD software for 3D modelling and management of large assemblies. Proficiency in Catia V5 would be a plus.
- Demonstrated experience in the production of 2D technical drawings according to the relevant standards for dimensioning and tolerances (e.g. ISO Geometrical Product Specifications, GPS).
- Proven hands-on experience in the construction and testing of mechanical systems. Experience in the assembly of sensitive equipment in a clean room environment would be considered advantageous.
- Demonstrated experience in the use of analytical methods and commercial FEA software (e.g. Ansys) for the analysis of structural and dynamic problems.
Experience in the following areas would be considered an asset:
- Structural joining techniques, particularly orbital welding and adhesive bonding.
- Experience in dimensional metrology, including the operation of coordinate measuring equipment and laser scanning systems.
Technical competencies:
- Design and analysis of mechanical structures.
- Production of 2D drawings and 3D models: (proficiency in Catia V5, ISO dimensioning, tolerancing).
- Integration of mechanical systems.
- Knowledge and application of numerical modelling in solid mechanics (finite element analysis).
- Knowledge and application of joining techniques: glueing and welding.
Behavioural competencies:
- Achieving Results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations.
- Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
- Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
- Solving Problems: addressing complex problems by breaking them down into manageable components.
- Managing Self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
Language skills:
Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
