Principal Scientist I

1 purpose...to reimagine medicine This is an exciting opportunity to join the Molecular & Cellular Sciences (MCS) team within Biomarker Development (BMD) and Translational Medicine (TM) at the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR). BMD focuses on delivering fit for purpose integrated biomarkers leveraging diverse expertise and knowledge in immunology, genomics, protein and cellular biology and state of the art data sciences.

As a Principal Scientist and tissue biomaker expert within MCS in BMD, you will work in close collaboration with project and clinical teams to define and implement clinical biomarker strategies, develop and implement novel exploratory tissue biomarker assays, and interpret results to enable proof of mechanism, proof of biology, safety and efficacy understanding and playing a pivotal role in early phase human clinical trials.

Key Responsibilities
- In collaboration with clinical and disease area research teams, contribute to the development of the biomarker strategy/ plan with the focus on tissue biomarkers (but not limited to) and drive the implementation in clinical trials
- Support clinical studies as biomarker study lead, be accountable for the execution of the biomarker plans:

- Develop, validate and implement innovative tissue and relevant biomarker assays with focus on innovative technologies for clinical studies
- Generate and interpret data to enable proof of mechanism, dose selection & proof of biology across early clinical programs and present results at internal meetings
- Partner with outsourcing functions to identify, evaluate and qualify new CROs, drive transitioning, validation of internally developed assays to external vendors to ensure compliance and high quality data:

- Manage and monitor outsourcing process according to Novartis/ BMD SOPs and procedures: ensure appropriate collection and analysis of samples, coordinate data collection, data analysis, interpretation and preparation of the results
- Ensure compliance with national and international guidelines including industry standards for Good Laboratory/Clinical Practice

**Minimum requirements**
- PhD required in Life Science, Immunology, Cell or Molecular biology or equivalent education (i.e. molecular pathologist)
- 1-2 year postdoctoral fellowship or industry experience (3+ years)
- Subject matter expert and hands-on experience in histology (H&E), immunohistochemistry (IHC), in-situ hybridization (ISH, FISH), immunofluorescence, multiplexing, Spatial Omics (Spatial Transcriptomics, GeoMx DSP NanoString), light, fluorescence and confocal microscopy, automated digital slide scanning systems
- Strong data analysis/ visualization expertise, experience with morphometry and quantitative digital image analysis software packages (HALO, HALO-AI, ImageScope, VisioPharm) to address key scientific questions
- Experience in additional bioanalytical area (i.e. ligand binding and/or flow cytometry assays) is desirable
- Strong organization skills, attention to detail, critical and creative thinking, multitasking, desire to learn and implement new technologies/ techniques and contribute to pioneering projects in a fast-paced working environment
- Excellent oral and written communication skills: communicate effectively and impactfully across the organization and with external collaborators
- Ability to lead or contribute to projects in a matrix, interdisciplinary environment with an inclusive, collaborative approach
- Participate and/or lead MCS workstreams and initiatives
