Phd Position On Plant Ecophysiology Modelling in

**Project background**
The doctoral project is part of the interdisciplinary research project UrbaNature, funded by MeteoSwiss within the framework of Switzerland's Global Climate Observing System and Global Atmosphere Watch programmes (GAW-CH, GCOS-CH). UrbaNature targets to create new knowledge and develop new methodologies on observing and simulating the role of vegetation in carbon, energy, and water cycles in the urban environment. Within this project, four doctoral students will collaborate closely, co-supervised by leading scientist from the University of Basel, ETH Zurich, University of Zurich and Empa.
**Your position**
- the advancement of already available modelling components of urban canopy radiation interception,
- the integration of well-established modelling approaches of ecosystem processes within urban environmental setups,
- the parameterisation of the models according to specific physiological responses and hydraulic strategies of vegetation in urban environments, and
- the evaluation of the model based on field ecophysiological and micrometeorological measurements.Additionally, the student will be required to assist in field work, such as the installation and maintenance of meteorological instruments and field ecophysiological measurements in the cities of Basel and Zurich. The student will work together with three PhD students from ETH Zurich, Empa and Uni. Zurich who will focus on urban plant ecophysiology, urban climate modelling, and urban vegetation remote sensing respectively.
**Your profile**
Applicants should hold a MSc degree (or equivalent) in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, biology, meteorology, physics, or similar.
Excellent coding skills (e.g. Python, R, Matlab) and experience in computational methods and numerical analysis are required.
Background or research experience in one of the following fields would be an advantage: plant ecophysiology, ecology, micrometeorology or urban climatology.
Excellent command of English, oral and written, is required. Basic German is an advantage.
This is a team research effort - it is expected that the applicant is willing and able to work within an international research environment, participate in field campaigns, be creative, communicate, think critically and share her/his work and skills.
The applicant will be potentially required to drive a car to assist in field campaigns. Therefore, a driving license and willingness to drive are also advantages.
