In Global Discovery Chemistry (GDC) at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) in Basel, Switzerland, we are at the core of Novartis’ purpose, designing and making new molecules for treating patients. We are looking for a highly motivated, passionate researcher with a strong scientific background in chemistry or related life science discipline to invent innovative medicines and advance the frontiers of drug discovery. Join us and help reimagine medicine **Responsibilities**: - Work highly collaboratively in a multidisciplinary project team to discover and develop novel therapies across various disease areas. - Integrate complex data to develop scientific hypotheses and design molecules to address key scientific questions. - Contribute to chemistry strategies to effectively drive projects and maximize the impact of scientists in your team. - Work in close collaboration with multiple line functions to enable project success through state-of-the-art drug discovery approaches. - Guide experimentation in a first-class chemistry laboratory infrastructure, deploy novel technologies, and collaborate with internal and external partners around the world. - Mentor, coach, and develop a dynamic team of chemists. - Discuss and communicate scientific results at project/group meetings, decision boards, and external conferences. - In addition to pipeline project responsibilities, participate in global initiatives shaping the future of drug discovery at NIBR. **Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion**: - Novartis is committed to building an outstanding, inclusive work environment and diverse teams representative of the patients and communities we serve._ **Minimum requirements** What you will bring to the role - PhD degree in chemistry or related life science discipline with profound understanding of medicinal/organic chemistry and at least 3+ years of drug discovery experience in pharmaceutical industry. - Demonstrated track-record of initiating, leading, or being a key contributor to cutting edge research in chemistry. - Significant project experience with impact on projects, from hit generation to lead optimization. - Good theoretical, practical and in-depth understanding of organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry, e.g. multi-parameter optimization and ability to integrate disease biology, ADME and toxicology data to solve drug discovery problems. - Passion for small molecule design and hands-on chemistry experimentation in the laboratory. - A mind-set of curiosity and cultural agility with an openness to diverse thinking and enthusiasm to develop yourself and others. - Excellent written and verbal communication and strong influencing skills, with an ability to present and discuss project strategies and challenges. - Aptitude to work in a fast-paced team-oriented matrix environment. Based on binding Swiss work permit regulations, this position can only be offered to an applicant that already has an EU/EFTA or Swiss Passport, or a non-EU/EFTA national that already has an unrestricted Swiss Residence & Work Permit or family reunification ”B permit”.
