The PositionPhD Internship / RiSE - Extracellular vesicles in neurodegeneration (12 months)

The RiSE program (Roche Internships for Scientific Exchange) is a highly competitive student research program at Roche. Join the Neuroscience and Rare Diseases Discovery team at Roche to help develop treatments for serious neurological conditions like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and more.
As a RiSE student in the NRD DTA you will join our group in Biofluid Section in Biomarkers, and perform at the Roche Innovation Center Basel, Switzerland to build on existing work in the field of Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) to characterize and measure EVs in neurodegenerative diseases. You will be hosted and mentored by a Roche scientist who will guide you through your research and provide you with the needed work infrastructure and collaborative network.
During the internship your tasks will include:
● Assist in the isolation and purification of extracellular vesicles from human biofluid samples using techniques such as ultracentrifugation, size-exclusion chromatography, or using commercial kits.
● Perform characterization of EVs using biochemical assays and methods to analyze the protein and nucleic acid content of EVs such as LC-MS, ELISA, ddPCR, RNA-seq as well as TEM and Cryo-EM.
● Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records of experiments and results.
● Collaborate with team members to analyze data and contribute to the interpretation of findings.
● Participate in lab meetings and present research progress and findings.
● Assist in the preparation of reports, presentations, and potentially contribute to scientific publications.
Who You Are

Moreover you are/have:
● Enrolled in a PhD or medical degree program in Biology/Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field at a university and are looking to expand your experience with an industry internship. (must be enrolled at university for 50% of the duration of your stay at Roche, PhD thesis can’t be defended in the first half of the internship). Applications from individuals not enrolled in a PhD or medical degree program will not be considered.
● Basic laboratory skills and well-versed with standard molecular biology techniques.
● Experience with isolation and quantification of EV isolation and quantification would be a plus.
● Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
● Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
● Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
● Enthusiasm for scientific research and a willingness to learn new techniques.

The preferred start date of the internship is April 2025 or upon availability. Applications need to include a CV and a cover letter, as well as a letter from your academic supervisor supporting your application to the RiSE Program.
Please note that due to regulations non-EU/EFTA citizens have to provide a certificate from the university stating that an industry internship is mandatory as part of the university training.
