Job Overview

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, seeks an Applied Physicist to contribute to its mission of probing the fundamental structure of the universe.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be responsible for maintaining and developing LHC geometry models in FLUKA, specifically those related to experimental insertions. This involves ensuring accurate characterization of expected signal, background, and radiation levels for detector components, as well as particle transport through the collider.

Additionally, the individual will address requests from various collaborations, validate simulations with available data, and contribute to improving the physics accuracy of the FLUKA code.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, applicants must possess a strong background in nuclear or particle physics, with relevant experience in simulation of radiation environments, knowledge of particle-matter interactions, programming techniques, and at least one Monte Carlo code (FLUKA). Fluency in English is required, with the ability to work in French being an advantage.

Eligibility criteria include being a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State, holding a Master's degree with 2-6 years of post-graduation experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation experience, and having never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Compensation and Benefits

The monthly stipend ranges between 6212 and 6828 Swiss Francs per month, net of tax. CERN's comprehensive health scheme covers individuals, their spouses, and children, while membership in the CERN Pension Fund is also provided. Additional benefits include installation grants, family allowances, payment of travel expenses, and on-the-job training.
