About the Position

The Universität Bern is seeking a highly skilled Bioinformatics / Biostatistics Staff Scientist to join its team. As a key member of our research group, you will be responsible for performing and further developing bioinformatic data analysis, as well as providing statistical support for process validation and automation in our accredited microbiology diagnostic department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement bioinformatic data analysis workflows for NGS data, including database curation and reporting.
  • Provide statistical support for process validation and automation in the microbiology diagnostic department.
  • Collaborate with researchers and clinicians to develop and implement new bioinformatic tools and methods.
  • Develop and maintain advanced scripting skills in languages such as R/Bioconductor, bash, Python/Perl, Julia, Snakemake, and Nextflow.
  • Work in a dynamic team environment, providing reliability, flexibility, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
Requirements
  • Postgraduate degree in bioinformatics or a related field (MSc as minimal qualification).
  • Relevant work experience in NGS data analysis, including amplicon sequencing, whole genome sequencing, and metagenomics/transcriptomics.
  • At least 2 years of relevant work experience with Unix (Linux) systems.
  • Advanced scripting skills and experience with statistical analysis, including multivariate analysis, Bayesian statistics, and machine learning algorithms.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with fluency in German and English.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in clinical, medical, or quality-control environments.
  • Background in clinical microbiology, diversity analysis, phylogenetics, or related fields.
  • Advanced use of statistical analysis and machine learning algorithms.
