Strategic Communications Specialist

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements a comprehensive communications strategy to advance the mission of MSF, including advising on positioning and identifying opportunities to communicate effectively.
  • Handles local and international media inquiries and proactively engages with local media to promote MSF's work.
  • Maintains close relationships with key local media and organizes events such as press conferences and press briefings, facilitating media and photographic visits to project sites for local and international journalists and photographers.
  • Monitors and reports on local media, flagging significant articles, trends, and news that impact MSF's work.
  • Produces strategic reports on the local media landscape, including key media outlets, audience members, and political affiliations.
  • Serves as a spokesperson during emergencies to alleviate high media pressure.
  • Manages and monitors MSF's social media network accounts, producing and disseminating content, and moderating online interactions.
  • Develops and coordinates the production of communication tools and products, including press releases, leaflets, brochures, posters, radio spots, articles, photos, and videos.
  • Provides training and coaching to project teams on external communication and identifies human resources needs for communications, hiring where necessary, and managing and developing direct reports.
  • Collaborates extensively with communications and operational colleagues to achieve shared goals.

Depending on our activities and needs, your responsibilities may be adapted and evolve according to the specific projects. You will not be facing these challenges alone—other MSF team members, both international and locally hired staff, will provide technical support, including extensive guidelines and protocols.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in journalism, communications, humanitarian affairs, political science, or another related field.
  • At least four years of international work experience in communications, journalism, or public relations.
  • At least one year of experience working in developing countries or unstable contexts.
  • The ability to source, identify, and analyze relevant and key operational information, explaining its context and translating it for use in communications materials.
  • Proficiency in social media skills, including community management and network identification.
  • Knowledge of audio-visual skills, including creation and production of tools.
  • IT skills, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Native English speaker or track record of English editing; fluency in any other language is a considerable asset.
  • Available for a minimum of six months.
  • Commitment to MSF's work and values.

  • Strong negotiation skills and a diplomatic approach.
  • Will to work in all kinds of contexts worldwide, including unstable areas.
  • Adaptable and able to work in a multicultural team.

  • Ability to train others.
