Data Software Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Data Software Engineer to join our team at the University of Zurich. As a key member of our data platform team, you will be responsible for designing and developing sustainable, accessibility-compliant solutions that meet the needs of our users.
Key Responsibilities- Transform business requirements into application architectures that meet the needs of our users.
- Manage and prevent production issues as needed, ensuring the stability and reliability of our data platform.
- Develop and implement data engineering solutions that integrate with multiple formats, including RDF, JSON, and CSV.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define technical solutions for customer problems and ensure the scalability and feasibility of front-end solutions.
- Research and develop proof-of-concepts and innovative new ideas to improve our data platform.
- Assist in defining alternate solutions for business problems and provide estimates for potential new workstreams.
- Establish and enforce best practices and lessons learned to promote a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
- Resolve and prevent long-term technical debt, ensuring the quality and maintainability of our codebase.
- Implement performance, stability, reliability, and architecture initiatives to ensure the optimal performance of our data platform.
- Ensure the team develops with quality measuring via clean pipelines and high code coverage.
- 5+ years of overall experience in software development, with a strong focus on data engineering.
- Experience with REST API development in Python, as well as other programming languages and frameworks such as Java, Scala, Go, and React.
- Experience with Unix/Shell scripting and database design and implementation.
- Knowledge of multi-tier architecture, rational/visio modeling, and cloud technologies such as AWS S3/MinIO, MS Azure Cloud, and HPC (High Performance Computing) SLURM workload manager.
- Experience working with semantic web technologies such as RDF, SPARQL, and Virtuoso, as well as relational databases such as SQL and PostgreSQL.
- Experience working with workflow managers such as Apache Airflow and different healthcare data models such as SPHN and FHIR.
- Data-intensive projects with a focus on data engineering and data integration.
- CI/CD development experience and working at hospitals or within healthcare.
- Experience working with privacy-sensitive data and a strong understanding of data governance and compliance.
