Researcher in Latin American Studies

The University of St is seeking a highly qualified Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team in the field of Latin American Studies.

As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will be responsible for conducting research in the area of illegal or informal economies with a focus on Latin America. Your tasks will include:

  • Conducting research on the linkages between illegal markets and governments, state agencies, or businesses, including social platforms and fintech offering digital payment services.
  • Submitting papers to peer-reviewed journals and presenting at scientific conferences.
  • Engaging in collaborations in an interdisciplinary environment, including sociology, political science, international law, and anthropology.
  • Applying for external research funding, such as the SNSF and private foundations.
  • Assisting with various tasks related to the chair and the Latin American studies in Switzerland, including the administration of the Swiss Society of Americanists, the Swiss School of Latin American Studies, and the Centro Latinoamericano-Suizo.
  • Working in our office on a daily basis.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A Ph.D. degree in sociology, political science, anthropology, development studies, or a related discipline.
  • Documented knowledge of the Latin American region.
  • A strong interest in academic research and proficiency in qualitative and (to a lesser degree) quantitative research methods.
  • Experience conducting and managing research projects in the Latin American region is an advantage.
  • A track record of international publications, third-party funding, and participation in academic bodies.
  • The ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, in an interdisciplinary and international research team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. German and/or Spanish language skills are an advantage.
