About the Job

CERN is seeking an expert in ion beam manipulation to join its team of scientists. This role involves applying advanced techniques to deliver purified and bunched beams that meet the requirements of the ISOLDE user community.

The successful candidate will collaborate with the team to apply ion beam manipulation techniques, contribute to the general RILIS on-call operation, work closely with the operations team and ISOLDE users in setting up special timing and synchronization schemes, drive the use, development and simulation of highly specialized ion traps used at ISOLDE, coordinate the development and implementation of new ion beam manipulation and ion detection infrastructure, support the ISOLDE Frontend redesign project, and engage in R&D activities within CERN.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, nuclear materials or a related field. They will also possess extensive hands-on experience with the operation, development, and simulation of advanced ion traps, demonstrated ability to manage complex R&D projects, knowledge of laser technology, laser spectroscopy and nuclear physics, and experience in using or operating radioactive ion beam facilities.

Key technical competencies include knowledge and application of beam production techniques, analysis and optimization of accelerator performance, simulation, design and development of infrastructure for detectors or experimental facilities, and operation and support of experimental facilities.

The successful candidate will be able to communicate effectively, manage themselves, achieve results, work in teams, and learn and share knowledge.

Language skills: Spoken and written English, ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in English, willingness to learn French.
