About the Role

This position is responsible for overseeing and managing the health, safety, and environmental aspects for oil and gas related research laboratories in North America. The successful candidate will develop, implement, and monitor a centralized HSE function that includes processes and training programs that are in compliance with corporate safety guidelines, federal/state/local regulations, and international best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, support, and coordinate various ASC and Saudi Aramco safety projects and programs, including facilities safety committees, safety training curriculum, emergency evacuation drills, and safety inspection programs.
  • Measure airborne concentrations of dust, gases, and mists using air sampling instruments and collection devices. Sample collection of potentially dangerous chemical, physical, and biological agents for analysis.
  • Identify and appraise loss potential conditions and practices, providing guidance and advice on methods, procedures, programs, or mechanisms to eliminate or reduce loss for the company.
  • Evaluate compliance with state and federal occupational health and safety regulations, laws, rules, and codes. Educate and inform employees about occupational health and safety hazards.
  • Conduct extensive field sampling, consulting with internal company and external organizations concerning workplace health hazards and control options. Apply scientific and engineering principles and methods to identify, analyze, and control hazards. Prepare technical reports, develop and present training, and support IH programs and emergency responses.
  • Create programs and practices as part of comprehensive safety programs to ensure a safe, healthy, and compliant work environment for employees.
  • Use scientific methods and the latest research to collect, identify, and monitor toxic chemicals, noise, radiation, asbestos, lasers, indoor air pollution, stress, repetitive motion trauma, electric and magnetic fields, and infectious biological materials.
  • Perform hazard analysis and develop sampling and/or safety plans.
  • Inspect and evaluate work operations, production methods, and engineering controls to determine potential contaminant emission sources or related health hazards associated with workplace conditions.
  • Determine the effectiveness of engineering control methods and make recommendations regarding location, design, structure, operations, and maintenance of contaminant and physical agent control systems.
  • Investigate the adequacy of ventilation, exhaust, lighting, and other conditions that may affect employee health, comfort, or efficiency.
  • Develop and deliver educational training meetings to instruct employees about occupational health and the prevention of accidents.
  • Evaluate investigation findings, proposed corrective measures, and compliance with health rules and standards.
  • Consult with management, industrial engineers, employee representatives, and other agencies regarding industrial health problems and solutions.
  • Respond to emergencies and perform accident investigations. Prepare reports of observations and analyses and provide recommendations about industrial health problems. Develop corrective methods, controls, and procedures to improve the work environment.
  • Champion the management of change processes, including guidance on hazard operability studies related to purpose-built laboratory equipment.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, Environmental Safety, Industrial Hygiene) and/or other closely related engineering major with relevance to HSE experience and certifications.
  • Seven (7) years' of HSE experience, preferably in the petrochemical or oil/gas industry.
  • Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly, and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined. Strong communication and presentation skills (oral and written) are required.
  • Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette.

Preferred Certifications

  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and/or a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) within a research and development facility with varying laboratory environments is desirable.
  • Certified Radiation Safety Officer or ability to obtain this certification (Highly desired).
