We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified PhD candidate to join our research team at the Universität Basel. The successful candidate will be part of a global history project led by Prof. Dr. Marie Muschalek, focusing on the intersection of violence and nature in the Age of Empire.
Project OverviewThe project, titled 'Killing to Keep – Violent Field Practices and Natural History in the Age of Empire,' is funded by the Swiss National Research Foundation. It explores the life-worlds of nature experts who killed animals to study and preserve them in the long nineteenth century. The research team will investigate the practices, people, and objects involved in this endeavor in multiple places around the world.
Research FocusThe successful candidate will be responsible for researching the collection of birds in the tropical forests of Northern South America in the second half of the nineteenth century. This will involve investigating the hunt for colorful feathers and difficult-to-reach specimens in the context of post-independence states and their remote indigenous forest communities.
Responsibilities- Conduct independent archival research and complete the dissertation within the funding period.
- Actively participate in advancing the project's overall research goals and collaborate closely with team members.
- Assist with administrative tasks, conference organization, communication, and webpage content management.
- A Master's degree (or equivalent) in History or a related discipline.
- Fluency in English, the team's working language. Additional language proficiencies relevant to the work package, notably Spanish, are highly valued.
- Ability to take residence in Basel during the entire contract period and travel for field research.
- Experience in archival research and familiarity with the historiography of South America's (post-)colonial past.
- Keenness to learn, openness to creative and experimental work, and eagerness to actively participate in the team effort.
- A fully funded PhD position (4 years) at the Universität Basel.
- A motivated, interdisciplinary team that will support your ideas, research, and career in a stimulating, welcoming, and multicultural environment.
- The opportunity to pursue your dissertation project within a collaborative framework, affiliated as a member of the Basel Graduate School of History.
