We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our team at The Biozentrum, University of Basel, to conduct research in the field of Global History and Violence Studies with a focus on South America.
Research Focus
The successful candidate will be responsible for researching the collection of birds in the tropical forests of Northern South America in the second half of the nineteenth century. This will involve investigating the hunt for colorful feathers and difficult-to-reach, fleeting specimens in the context of post-independence states and their remote indigenous forest communities.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct independent archival research and complete the dissertation within the funding period.
- Actively participate in advancing the project's overall research goals, collaborate closely with teammates, and contribute to administrative tasks, conference organization, and communication.
- Conduct fieldwork, seek contact with local experts, and respectfully collaborate with them in the geographical area of the work package.
- Publish one peer-reviewed article or book chapter and present findings at international conferences.
Requirements
- Hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in History or a related discipline.
- Be fluent in English, our team's working language, and have additional language proficiencies relevant to the work package, notably Spanish.
- Take residence in Basel during the entire contract period and be able to travel for the project's field research.
- Have experience in archival research and familiarity with the historiography of South America's (post-)colonial past.
- Be keen to learn, open to creative and experimental work, and eager to actively participate in the team effort.
