Job Overview

OCHA, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Human Rights Specialist - Humanitarian Aid and Protection to join its team in Geneva. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights in humanitarian contexts.

About the Position

The Human Rights Specialist will be responsible for supporting the development and implementation of human rights-based approaches in OCHA's humanitarian programming. This will involve working closely with colleagues across the organization to ensure that humanitarian responses are grounded in respect for international human rights law and principles. The Specialist will also provide technical assistance to country offices on human rights issues and support the development of policies and guidelines related to humanitarian action and human rights.

Main Responsibilities

The Human Rights Specialist will have the following key responsibilities:

Support the Development of Human Rights-Based Approaches: Provide technical guidance and support to OCHA staff and partners on integrating human rights into humanitarian programming, including through the development of joint strategies and plans.
Provide Technical Assistance: Offer technical expertise to country offices on human rights issues related to humanitarian action, including monitoring and reporting, advocacy, and capacity building.
Support Policy Development: Contribute to the development of policies and guidelines related to humanitarian action and human rights, ensuring that these are aligned with international human rights law and principles.
Collaborate with Partners: Work closely with other UN agencies, NGOs, and governments to advance human rights-based approaches in humanitarian contexts.
Conduct Research and Analysis: Conduct research and analysis on human rights issues relevant to humanitarian action, identifying best practices and lessons learned.
Represent OCHA: Represent OCHA at meetings and conferences related to humanitarian action and human rights, as required.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will have:

•A master's degree or equivalent in human rights, law, international relations, social sciences, or a related field.
•At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law, or a related area, preferably in a humanitarian context.
•Experience in strategic planning, programme management, and/or results-based programming would be an asset.
•Excellent communication and analytical skills, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
•Strong knowledge of international human rights law and principles, as well as humanitarian response mechanisms.
•Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required, while knowledge of French would be an advantage.
•Ability to travel frequently and stay in challenging environments when necessary.
