PhD Student Position in Infection Biology

We are seeking a highly motivated and driven PhD student to join our team at the Department of Biomedicine, Universität Basel. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in infection biology and a background in microbiology, molecular biology, or a related field.
Research FocusThe Boeck lab is focused on understanding the mechanisms underlying antibiotic treatment failure of life-threatening lung infections. We have developed strategies to assess bacterial behavior and drug susceptibility at single-cell resolution and unmet scale. The successful candidate will work on adapting our Antimicrobial Single-Cell Testing technology to Pseudomonas aeruginosa and investigating whether distinct bacterial populations or single-cell behaviors contribute to poor treatment outcomes.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct research in infection biology, focusing on pulmonary Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections
- Develop and implement new methods for assessing bacterial behavior and drug susceptibility
- Collaborate with the Boeck team and other researchers at Universität Basel
- Present research findings at national and international conferences
- MSc in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related field
- Experience in wet lab and/or computational biology
- Strong drive to advance science and technologies
- Ability to work independently and interact constructively within a multidisciplinary team
- Proficiency in English
- Experience with microbiological methods, fluorescence microscopy, and molecular biology
- Computing experience, particularly with Python or R
The Boeck team is a young and dynamic group of researchers dedicated to understanding the mechanisms underlying antibiotic treatment failure of life-threatening lung infections. We have a strong local and national network of inter-disciplinary research teams in academia and industry working on bacterial infections and on antimicrobials.
