ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT

The Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) is responsible for the organization and coordination of the work of the Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D) of the Union which deals mainly with ICT-focused development policies, strategies and programmes, as well as technical cooperation activities, to promote digital inclusion and drive digital transformation at community, country and regional levels. To effectively and efficiently serve the needs of ITU members, BDT is organized into four functional areas:

- Office of the Deputy to the Director and Field Operations Coordination Department
- Partnerships for Digital Development Department
- Digital Networks & Society Department
- Digital Knowledge Hub Department

**BACKGROUND INFORMATION**:
ITU plays an important role in emphasizing the critical role of ICTs in disaster risk reduction and management, and supports its Member States, in the four phases of disaster management through the design of national emergency telecommunications plans, the setting up of early warning and monitoring systems and the provision of emergency telecommunications equipment when disasters strike.

ITU has been also given the mandate to support the use of digital technologies to reduce and address the effects of natural hazards, including pandemics, that can trigger emergencies and disasters which can cause loss of lives and economic impact around the world.

**TERMS OF REFERENCE**:
The intern that will carry out the following activities:

- Assist in reviewing the drafts of the National Emergency Telecommunications Plans which ITU is helping countries with; and to assist in reviewing the emergency telecommunications baseline assessments to identify which countries have national legislation and regulation on emergency telecommunications.
- Assist in the preparation of emergency telecommunications equipment for deployment.
- Assist the emergency telecommunications team in coordinating the development of the Disaster Connectivity Map. Develop and test this capability with expert contract support, and in coordination with the Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC) and the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA), among other partners.
- Assist with the research of reports on multi-hazard early warning systems and ICTs for disaster risk reduction and management.

**COMPETENCIES**:
**QUALIFICATION REQUIRED**:
**Education**: University degree in the areas of telecommunications engineering, computer science, information technology, disaster management, or an equivalent level of education and specialization in a relevant field.

**Experience**: No work experience required.

**Languages**: English at advanced level. Knowledge of French is an advantage.

**REMENURATION INFORMATION**:
**Please note that a non-remunerated Internship position at ITU does not carry the same conditions of employment as a Short-term or a Fixed-term position. Mandatory Medical Insurance, travel expenses, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or sponsoring institutions.**

The intern is requested to work onsite (ITU Headquarters).
